たてなみ【縦波】

【物】 a longitudinal wave.

●縦波では媒質の粒子は波の進行と平行な方向に振動する. In a longitudinal wave [longitudinal waves], the displacement of the medium is parallel to the propagation of the wave.

●音波は縦波だが, 光波は横波だ. Whereas sound waves are longitudinal waves, light waves are transverse waves.

・流体中を伝わる波は必ず縦波である. Waves traveling through a fluid are always longitudinal waves.

・地震の際には縦波と横波の両方が生じる. In an earthquake both longitudinal and transverse waves are produced.
